Tummy Tuck As An Alternative To Liposuction
Abdominoplasty, otherwise known as a tummy tuck ,is often given as an option for those who seek a flatter abdomen. But aside from the tummy tuck, liposuction is also offered. Stomach fat tends to be very stubborn even with diet and exercise. Before the introduction of liposuction, the only other option to take was diet and exercise. Then came abdominoplasty, which was often used as a “finishing touch” to liposuction. But can one undergo only abdominoplasty and still get results?
First, we need to understand what a tummy tuck involves. During the procedure, quantities of skin depending on the problem area (usually on the lower abdomen) is taken out and the remaining is “tucked in” to create a smoother, tighter and flatter profile. Abdominoplasty mainly deals with sagging, extra skin. Thus, it is ideal for those who have lost a large amount of weight (from diet/exercise or after giving birth) and ended up with large quantities of excess skin.
Dealing With Excess Skin
Whether you should go for liposuction or abdominoplasty will boil down to one man aspect: the quantity of excess skin you have on the stomach area. If you had considerable weight change before, then abdominoplasty would be a likely better option. On the other hand, liposuction may only worsen the problem. Know that liposuction is entirely for fat elimination, and does not involve the firming of sagging skin. When fat is taken out, there will be less volume beneath the skin, which in turn would make the skin even looser than before.
Conversely, if only a bit of fat needs to be taken out (less than 25 lbs.), you shouldn’t have any problems with sagging skin. But if you call for more than 25 lbs. to be taken out and may already have existing sagging skin in the abdomen, liposuction should not be your only priority.
Newer And Safer Techniques Available
Abdominoplasty can also be a good alternative if you want to take the safer route. Of course, all surgeries carry risks, but you could lower them and some procedures are less daunting. There are mainly 2 types of abdominoplasty that can be done today: complete abdominoplasty (traditional) and partial lower abdominoplasty (also referred to as ‘scarless’ abdominoplasty). The main difference between the two is in the scarring outcome.
Scars are inevitable when it comes to plastic surgery in general, but certain procedures like partial abdominoplasty leaves less visible scars. Also, incisions can be strategically placed on problem areas so the resulting scars will not be as obvious in both tummy tuck procedures.
